Open a Chamberlain garage door with your phone: SOLO + KIT

Guides Published on 26/10/2026 9 min read by 1Control
Smartphone with the 1Control app in front of an anthracite garage door: open a Chamberlain or LiftMaster garage door with your phone

In short: there are two ways to open a Chamberlain garage door with your phone. The first is the manufacturer's: myQ, Chamberlain's app, which according to Chamberlain works with the operators on its list, connected to the internet through a gateway on your home router. The second works with any Chamberlain or LiftMaster operator, however old: 1Control SOLO + KIT. None of the Chamberlain or LiftMaster remotes in the compatibility checker can be copied, so 1Control SOLO does not copy your remote but the one that comes with the SOLO KIT, a receiver that a technician connects to the operator. SOLO then opens the garage from the 1Control app over Bluetooth, with no internet needed in the garage.

LiftMaster belongs to the same group (the Chamberlain Group, as Chamberlain puts it on its website), and in Europe the two brands' operators and remotes are largely the same: what you read here applies to LiftMaster too. One warning: many myQ guides and videos online are North American, where Chamberlain sells different openers and remotes. The myQ details below come from Chamberlain's and LiftMaster's European pages (checked on 24/10/2026), the remote data from the 1Control compatibility checker. The overview for every brand is in smart garage door opener without Wi-Fi.

With a recent operator on the list, myQ is the manufacturer's route. With an older MotorLift, or a gate of another brand next to the garage, the route that keeps everything in one app is SOLO + KIT.

myQ or SOLO + KIT: what Chamberlain's app does

Under the myQ name, Chamberlain sells two garage door operators with myQ built in, the ML810EV-SMART and the ML1040EV-SMART, and the myQ Starter Kit 830REV-01 to upgrade operators already installed. According to Chamberlain, the kit contains the myQ internet gateway, a 771REV-01 infrared photocell with cable, an Ethernet cable and a power supply, and it connects the operator to the internet through your home router. The kit page lists as compatible the ML700EV, ML800EV, ML810EV, ML1000EV, ML1000EV-S, ML1000EV-F and ML1040EV, the two SMART models and three gate operators (CHLA250EVC, CHAA250EVK, CHSL400EVC). Older operators, such as the MotorLift 500, are not on the list.

According to Chamberlain, the myQ app is free and runs on Android and iOS. From anywhere, it opens and closes the garage door or gate, shows whether it is open or closed and sends a notification when the status changes; you can schedule closing times and give access to any number of authorised people. LiftMaster also offers myQ on its European website, with the myQ internet gateway. The pages we checked say nothing about voice assistants, CarPlay or Android Auto: if you need them, ask the manufacturer.

myQ starts from the operator: you need a model on the list and the gateway on your router. SOLO + KIT does not depend on the list, because the KIT receiver also connects to operators that are not on it, and the same 1Control app can hold a gate of another brand as well. SOLO opens over Bluetooth, without internet; family and guests get free access on their phone number, with time slots and an expiry date if needed.

Why the Chamberlain remote cannot be copied

With most brands you simply copy the remote onto SOLO; with Chamberlain and LiftMaster you cannot. The compatibility checker lists 6 Chamberlain remotes and 5 LiftMaster ones, and none of them copies: the 750E, 750EML, 751E, 752E and 754E are quartz remotes on 27.145 MHz, a frequency SOLO does not copy; the TX4UNI is a 433 MHz rolling code remote that SOLO does not copy. The MotorLift ML700 manual itself recommends using original remotes only.

1Control compatibility checker catalogue, updated on 24/10/2026. LiftMaster: the same models, except the 750EML.

The model is printed on the back of the remote or in the battery compartment; a model that is not on the list does not copy. Check yours in the checker under Chamberlain or LiftMaster. For an extra remote for the old quartz models there is 1Control QZERO, once the model is checked; for the TX4UNI and recent models you need an original of the same generation as the operator.

SOLO + KIT: your Chamberlain garage on your phone

The SOLO KIT is not SOLO: it is a 433 MHz receiver with its own fixed-code remote, which SOLO always copies. A technician connects the receiver to the garage door operator; from then on the KIT remote moves the door, and SOLO copies that one instead of the Chamberlain remote. The KIT does not depend on the operator's radio, so it also suits the oldest MotorLift units, and your original remotes keep working.

  1. Have a technician connect the KIT receiver to the operator, or do it yourself if you are comfortable with electrical work; the KIT remote should now move the door.
  2. Mount SOLO near the door. It is not wired to the operator or to the mains: two C batteries last about two years at around ten openings a day.
  3. In the 1Control app, hold the KIT remote against the notch on the left side of SOLO and follow the instructions.
  4. Wait until the door is fully closed, then tap the round test button: if the door starts, the copy is done.

If you cannot connect anything to the operator, SOLO is not the right fit. A standard SOLO handles up to 4 automations, even of different brands, for 10 users; the app history shows who opened and when. All of this applies to a LiftMaster operator too.

ismartgate, Remootio and GSM modules

You will also come across modules from other makers. ismartgate publishes pages for many Chamberlain openers, often from markets outside Europe: like Remootio, its module is wired to the push-button input of the operator and runs on its maker's app. A GSM module takes a SIM card, is wired the same way and opens when an authorised number calls (see the GSM gate opener guide). They fit almost any operator, but they need signal in the garage, which underground car parks often lack; SOLO + KIT opens over Bluetooth even there.

Your Chamberlain garage from afar, by voice and from the car

On its own, SOLO works over Bluetooth within 15-20 metres: it needs no network, even in an underground garage, but it will not open from the office. To open from afar you add 1Control LINK: the hub stays at home, connects to the internet over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and passes commands to SOLO over Bluetooth, within about 25 metres in a straight line. LINK brings Alexa, Google Home, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; Siri Shortcuts already work with SOLO within Bluetooth range and, with LINK, from afar too. SOLO AUTO, the version to keep in the car, shows up on CarPlay and Android Auto without LINK (see open your gate with CarPlay). All of this works with the KIT too.

FAQ: Chamberlain garage doors and your phone

Can I open my Chamberlain garage door with my phone?

Yes, in two ways. With myQ, Chamberlain's app, if your operator is on the myQ Starter Kit list or has myQ built in: the gateway connects to your home router. Or with 1Control SOLO + KIT: a technician connects the KIT receiver to the operator, SOLO copies the KIT remote and opens from the 1Control app over Bluetooth, with any Chamberlain or LiftMaster operator.

Is myQ compatible with all Chamberlain operators?

No. According to Chamberlain, the myQ Starter Kit 830REV-01 works with the ML700EV, ML800EV, ML810EV, ML1000EV, ML1000EV-S, ML1000EV-F and ML1040EV, the two SMART models and three gate operators. Older operators, such as the MotorLift 500, are not on the list: there, the route is SOLO + KIT.

Can a Chamberlain or LiftMaster remote be copied to a phone?

No. The 750E, 750EML, 751E, 752E and 754E are quartz remotes on 27.145 MHz and the TX4UNI is a 433 MHz rolling code remote: in the 1Control checker none of them can be copied, for Chamberlain or for LiftMaster. For the phone, the route is SOLO + KIT.

Can I open my Chamberlain garage when I am away from home?

Yes, with the LINK hub: it stays at home, connects to the internet over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and passes the command to SOLO over Bluetooth. Without LINK, SOLO only opens from nearby, within 15-20 metres.

In short: myQ or SOLO + KIT for your Chamberlain garage

With a recent Chamberlain operator on the list, myQ is the manufacturer's route, with the gateway on your router. In every other case, an older MotorLift, several doors of different brands or a garage without signal, the way to open a Chamberlain garage door with your phone is 1Control SOLO with the KIT: a technician connects the receiver once, then the door opens over Bluetooth from the app, with free access for the family; LINK adds distance, voice and the car. For sectional and up-and-over doors of every brand, see the garage door app guide.
