In short: for a gym or swimming pool locker, a storage room at home and a bike or e-scooter on everyday stops, a padlock that opens from your phone gets rid of keys and combinations. 1Control LOCO opens from the app or from an Apple Watch or Wear OS smartwatch, over Bluetooth and without Internet, and you share access with whoever you choose.
One thing first: LOCO is a compact shackle padlock, suited to lockers, storage rooms and light use. For a valuable bike or e-scooter left in the street, the benchmark remains a bike lock of the grade your insurer asks for.
Gym, swimming pool or changing room locker
This is where a padlock that opens from your phone helps most. With a key padlock the key has to go somewhere, even into the pool; with a combination padlock you forget the code, or someone watches you dial it.
- It opens from your watch: with an Apple Watch or a Wear OS smartwatch you open LOCO with a tap, and the phone can stay locked in the locker.
- Nothing to take into the water: no key on your wrist, no code to remember after the workout.
- Damp is not a problem: LOCO is IP67-certified and works from -20 °C to +50 °C, so changing rooms and showers do not bother it.
- It works without signal: basement changing rooms often have no coverage; LOCO uses Bluetooth and does not need the Internet to open.
Before buying, check two things: that the gym allows your own padlock, and that the shackle fits through the locker's hasp. You can see the shape of the padlock in the photos on the LOCO page.
The same goes for a locker at school or at work, if the rules allow your own padlock.
Key, combination or app: which padlock for a locker
- Key: cheap and no battery, but you have to carry the key, even into the water, and if you lose it the padlock has to be cut off.
- Combination: no key, but you forget the code, people can watch you dial it and, once you have given it to someone, you cannot take it back without changing it for everyone.
- App: it opens from your phone or watch, access is given and removed person by person and there is a log of openings; in return it needs charging and you need your phone or smartwatch.
For a locker that only you use once a week, a good combination padlock may be enough. The app pays off if you train often, want nothing on your wrist or share the locker, with a family member for example.

Bike and e-scooter: when it fits and when you need more
LOCO is also designed for bikes and scooters, but choose it honestly according to where you leave them.
- It fits short stops and places that are already protected: the courtyard or bike room of your building, the bike rack at the office, the scooter in the hallway. No hunting for a key and, if the bike is shared at home, everyone opens it with their own phone.
- It is not enough for a valuable bike, e-bike or e-scooter left in the street, overnight for example. There, mechanical strength is what counts: a D-lock or chain of the grade your insurer asks for. LOCO is not a certified high-security lock and not an alarm: it does not report a theft attempt.
On a bike or scooter, LOCO locks a chain or cable that runs through the frame and around a fixed point: strength and length depend on the chain. Rain and sun are not a problem, and the app warns you when the battery is getting low.
Storage room, cellar, garage and shed
Here the advantage is sharing. Instead of copies of the key:
- you invite family, neighbours or a tradesperson with their phone number, from the app and even remotely;
- you pick dates, days and hours, and the share expires on its own;
- you revoke it at any time;
- the log shows who opened and when.
Up to 10 users can use LOCO; more can be purchased from the app. In a cellar Bluetooth works even with no signal; reinforced concrete and metal doors do weaken it, though, so open from close by: typical range is 5-10 metres. If the room stores guests' bikes at a B&B, see also the guide to secure bike storage for guests.
How to use it from day one
- Charge LOCO with a USB-C cable.
- Install the 1Control app, free for iPhone and Android, and register with your phone number.
- Pair LOCO by following the app's guided procedure. The padlock's 8-digit PIN makes you an administrator: keep it to yourself or give it only to people who manage the padlock with you, not to people who just need to open it.
- From then on you open it with a tap on your phone or watch, and create a share for each person who needs to use it.
Battery, rain and cold: LOCO's features
- Built-in lithium battery, rechargeable over USB-C: more than 500 openings per charge and over 180 days on standby.
- Charge level in the app, with a warning when it is running low. When it is flat, you recharge it with a USB-C cable.
- IP67, from -20 °C to +50 °C: fine in a changing room, a courtyard and outdoors all year round.
- Reinforced aluminium body and stainless steel shackle.
- Encrypted Bluetooth communication between phone and padlock.
- Free app, no subscription: the same app as the SOLO gate opener and the DORY smart lock.
What LOCO does not do
- No fingerprint reader: it opens from your phone or smartwatch. The differences between the two systems are explained in the smart padlock guide.
- It is not a certified bike lock or an alarm.
- On its own it does not open remotely: for that you need the 1Control LINK hub, connected to your home network over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and placed within about 25 metres of the padlock. It makes sense for the cellar or shed at home, not for the bike when you are out.
- Without phone or watch you cannot open it yourself: another person you have given access to can open it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use LOCO on a gym locker?
Yes, it is one of the uses it is designed for: you open it from the app or from an Apple Watch or Wear OS smartwatch, even without signal. Check that the gym allows your own padlock and that the shackle fits through the locker's hasp.
Is LOCO good enough as a bike lock?
For short stops and protected places, yes. For a valuable bike or e-bike left in the street you need a lock of the grade your insurer asks for: LOCO is not a certified high-security lock.
Can LOCO be opened without a phone?
Yes, from an Apple Watch or Wear OS smartwatch. With neither phone nor watch, another authorised person opens it with their smartphone. LOCO has no fingerprint reader and no keypad.
How many people can open the same LOCO?
Up to 10 users; more can be purchased from the app. Shares for these users are free, with the dates and hours you choose, and can be revoked at any time.
Can LOCO handle rain and changing room damp?
Yes. It is IP67-certified and works from -20 °C to +50 °C.
Conclusion
For lockers, storage rooms and everyday stops by bike or scooter, LOCO gets rid of keys and combinations: it opens from your phone or watch, can be shared with whoever you choose and recharges with a USB-C cable. For a valuable bike left in the street, choose a lock of the right grade instead: there, mechanical strength counts, not the app.
